INDEXG AND NAKURU CITy explore ESPORTS collaboration
IndexG Esports played host to the leadership of Kenya’s newest city, Nakuru City at our offices in Nairobi County. The meeting was centered on introducing the concept of esports to the city’s leadership and exploring the potential it can have to the city’s growth objectives.
The team led by the CECM for Youth, Sports and Social Services, Hon. Josephine Atieno, were first taken through an understanding of the Kenyan video gaming industry, including its market value and its growth over time.
They also got to see case studies of cities from other parts of the world that are tapping into esports to achieve their socio-economic growth objectives.
Hon. Atieno shared her joy in learning the massive potential of esports,
“I am really impressed with what I have seen. We have been opened to a side of the world that we have been passing by without paying attention to. I am really keen on how we can use this passion point of the youth as a tool for social change.”
Hon. Rosemary KImani, the Nakuru City Chief Officer for Culture and Tourism on her part held on the potential of esports as a booster of the city’s tourism,
“Nakuru County is already one of the leading tourism destinations in Kenya and Africa at large. We however have the potential to diversify our offering to potential visitors of our city. Being an esports hub can build on our other major sports tourism products like rugby and the Safari Rally.”
IndexG Esports C.E.O Ronny Lusigi also emphasized on the potential for Nakuru to become the esports hub of not only Kenya but also Africa,
“We have a city here that is already doing well as a popular entertainment and tourism destination. We can tap into that to make Nakuru the Katowice of Africa. This was just an initial engagement, we look forward to having a solid plan for Nakuru City in the near future. Perhaps, this year we may drop one event there.”
Nakuru was officially awarded the charter to become a city on December 1st, 2021 after the Senate of the Republic of Kenya approved Nakuru Municipality’s application to city status. It is Kenya’s fourth and newest city. The Nakuru Town had a population of 367, 183 at the time of it’s elevation to City status.
