AFRICA’S FASTEST MAN MENTORS KENYAN GAMERS
Today was a special day for the Kenyan gamers as they got to meet and interact with Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala. The gamers, who just like Omanyala are set to represent Kenya in Birmingham for the Commonwealth Games, got a rare visit to the living legends training camp at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, in Nairobi, Kenya.
This is part of IndexG Esports program in building the capacity of esports actors in Kenya, especially the gamers.
The gamers got to watch the legendary sprinter train and later on they had a brief pep talk from the star focused on what it takes to be an elite performer.
Team Captain Elias “Stylz” Onchari expressed the joy of the gamers in the mentorship program, “It feels so good to watch and interact with an internationally elite athlete like Omanyala. We are so happy and we have really taken lots of lessons from him. He is such a big inspiration not just to us but to millions of other young people in Kenya and Africa.”
Female gamer Shantel Wanjiru termed the session an ‘eye-opener’, “It had not yet dawned to me what it means to represent your nation. This being my first time to fly the flag, I must say that Omanyala has really opened my eyes to what it means to represent my nation. It's an honor that comes with huge responsibility.”
Omanyala on his part assured the Kenyan esports community of his continued support, drawing similarities with his journey to making sprinting a top discipline in Kenya’s athletics scene. “When I started doing sprints, there was not that much support, so I know what it means to engage in an emerging sport. For this reason, I shall give all my support to help esports rise to the levels of prominence that it deserves.”
